Welcome to Ghostwind Appaloosas at the
Greenwood Ranch located in the central plains of Saskatchewan,
Canada, just NW of Williston, North Dakota and NE of Chief Joseph’s
famous last stand near Chinook, Montana.
Here at Ghostwind Appaloosas we are continuing our selected
appaloosa breeding for those intrinsic qualities of endurance,
confirmation, correctness, demeanor, disposition, and color which
foundation appaloosas are renowned for.
Our breeding philosophy comes from the first
cardinal principle of horse breeding found in the 1750’s expression,
“like begets like.”(1)
This expression has been followed in the creation and maintenance of
all the great horse types in the world.
Our Ghostwind Appaloosa foundation horses have the pedigrees
that come from some of the best breeding programs in the United States
and Canada.
Our two senior stallions, HMH Phantom Spirit
and Apache Kid Galahad, bring powerhouse pedigrees to our program
and our mares bring their own distinguished foundation pedigrees to
Ghostwind Appaloosas.
Our pedigree research led us to geneticists,
biologists, historians, archivists, stud books, letters, books,
official records and documents from horse owners and various
associations.
We are
continuing to interview, investigate pedigrees, visit foundation
breeders, and electronically research the continuing Appaloosa
Story.
.
Our ranch’s search for just the right type of
horse began decades ago when Bill was riding 12 to 16 hours a day
while judging hunting dog field trials in the Pacific Northwest –
Ghostwind Appaloosa Country.
After many years of riding many different breeds of horses
Bill found the Appaloosa had the endurance to work all day, the
temperament, demeanor, and disposition to put his children safely on
their backs while on breaks, the confirmation to cover ground, go
over obstacles and the surefootedness to wade through creeks and go
down steep terrain without a misstep. Then there’s the added bonus
of all that beautiful color.
It
wasn’t long before Bill bought his first horse and our breeding
program began.
At first we decided to breed to outside
stallions, but as our passion for the true foundation appaloosa grew
it quickly became evident that we needed to build our own program
using our own carefully selected stallions and mares. Along the way
we have met some wonderful people and we are very proud that they
have entrusted us with continuing the legacy of these extraordinary
horses. Many of them have shared their knowledge and their stories
and they are now life long friends.
Welcome/Bienvenue to Ghostwind Appaloosas
